Psychosexual Therapy

Psychosexual therapy is now at Charnwood Intimacy.

Our sexual and intimate lives are deeply connected to our sense of self, our relationships, and our wellbeing. Yet they’re often the last thing we feel we can talk about, even with a doctor, a partner, or someone we trust.

Psychosexual therapy offers a private, non-judgmental space to explore the sexual and relational difficulties that are affecting your life. This work has its own home at Charnwood Intimacy, part of the Charnwood Counselling group.

Your body, your space.

Now at Charnwood Intimacy

Psychosexual and intimacy therapy now has a dedicated home. Charnwood Intimacy is part of the same group, with the same therapist and the same calm, private rooms at The Old Arts College, and offers a space built specifically for these conversations.

Is psychosexual therapy for me?

You don’t need to have a diagnosable condition or a crisis to benefit from psychosexual therapy. Here are some of the things we often hear from people considering it:

  • I experience pain during sex and I’ve been told nothing is physically wrong
  • I’ve lost all interest in sex and I don’t know why
  • I feel so anxious about sex that I avoid it altogether
  • My relationship is suffering because of our sexual difficulties
  • I’ve never really enjoyed sex and I’m starting to wonder if something is wrong
  • Sex has changed since I had a baby, went through menopause, or became ill
  • I want to talk about something that happened to me and how it’s affecting me now
  • I feel ashamed of my desires and I don’t know who to talk to
  • My partner and I want to work through this together but we don’t know where to start
  • I just want to feel normal

How can psychosexual therapy help?

Over time, working with a specialist psychosexual therapist can help you to:

  • Understand the physical, emotional, and relational factors contributing to your difficulties
  • Reduce anxiety and self-consciousness around sex and intimacy
  • Process past experiences of sexual trauma at a pace that feels safe
  • Reconnect with your body and your own desires
  • Communicate more openly with a partner about needs, boundaries, and concerns
  • Develop a more accepting and compassionate relationship with your sexuality
  • Find a way forward that feels authentic to who you are
  • Feel less alone with experiences that are rarely spoken about

What it can help with

Psychosexual therapy is a specialist form of talking therapy focused on sexual health, intimacy and the relational side of sexual experience. It is not sex education, and it involves no physical examination or contact. It’s suitable for individuals and couples, and for people of any gender, sexuality or relationship structure.

Sexual difficulties

Low libido and mismatched desire, erectile difficulties and performance anxiety, delayed or premature ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, vaginismus, and pain during sex.

Sexual trauma and its effects

The lasting impact of sexual abuse, assault or coercion on intimacy, trust and how safe your own body feels.

Intimacy and relationships

Mismatched libidos, lost connection after a significant life event, rebuilding after infidelity, and difficulty talking about sex, needs or boundaries with a partner.

Identity, sexuality and self-worth

Confusion or anxiety about sexual identity, shame around desires, body image, the effects of menopause or illness, and concerns about compulsive behaviour or pornography use.

Your therapist

Psychosexual therapy is led by our Founder and Resident Psychotherapist, Jo Wiseman. Registered with the BACP, Jo is completing specialist training towards COSRT accreditation, the UK’s leading professional body for psychosexual and relationship therapy.

Jo’s approach is warm, grounded and deeply respectful. She understands that bringing sexual concerns to therapy takes courage, and brings the same non-judgmental presence to this work that she brings to everything else.
