Counselling for Children and Young People

Growing up is hard. Talking helps.

Growing up asks a great deal of a person. Exams that feel as though they decide everything, friendships that shift without warning, a body changing faster than you can get used to, a phone that never switches off.

Sometimes something larger lands on top of all that. A bereavement, a family coming apart, an illness, something frightening that nobody has talked about since. Growing up does not pause while you deal with it, and carrying both at once asks a lot of anyone.

At Charnwood Counselling we work with teenagers and young people from the age of 14, in our Loughborough rooms or online. If you are a parent, carer or guardian, this works best when it is their decision as much as yours. If you are the young person reading this, what you say in the room stays in the room.

Your story, your pace.

Is this for me?

These are some of the things young people tell us when they first come. If any of them sound like you:

  • Everything feels like too much and I do not know where to start
  • I am fine at school and then I get home and I am not
  • Someone I love died and I do not know what to do with it
  • Something happened and I have never told anyone the whole of it
  • My family are worried about me and I do not know how to explain it
  • I do not want to be a burden to my friends with this
  • I feel different from everyone and I cannot say why
  • I have been told to come here and I am not sure I want to be

How it works

The practical questions are usually the ones that decide whether someone comes at all:

  • 50 minutes, at a regular time, with the same therapist each week
  • The first 30 minute conversation is free and commits you to nothing
  • What is said in the room is confidential, including from parents, carers and guardians
  • The exceptions are explained at the start, in plain words, not in a form
  • Parents, carers and guardians are welcome to ask questions before the work begins
  • Nobody has to talk about anything before they are ready to
  • Stopping is allowed, and saying it is not the right fit is allowed

We’re easily reachable by bus. Bus stop AA (Ashby Square) is right outside with regular buses from Leicester, Shepshed, Birstall, Rothley, Mountsorrel, Quorn and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. This stop is also served by local KinchBus services, including buses every 10 minutes from Loughborough Railway Station and Loughborough University. Skylink Derby/Leicester and buses to Nottingham also stop less than 5 minutes walk away on Derby Road and Baxter Gate.

Visiting us by car

There are a number of car parks within a couple of minutes walk. Sainsbury’s on Ashby Road offers up to 2 hours free parking, as does Regents Place Retail Park. Paid parking is also available at Packe Street and Granby Street car parks, whilst on-street parking is available in the surrounding area after 6pm.

Our counsellors

Not everyone on our team works with young people. Those who do are qualified and experienced in this work, and DBS checked.

As with any enquiry, we will talk through what you are looking for before anything is arranged, and match you with the right person. If we are not the right place, we will say so.
